Looking for elk at dusk

September is a good time to go view the elk at the Pigeon River Forest in Vanderbilt, Michigan. They have the largest herd of free ranging elk east of the Mississippi River. The best time of day to go is early in the morning or at dusk. This time my husband and I weren't able to capture any photos of them but could hear them bugling in the distance. Maybe next time....

Will they hurt you or do they act like deer?

Actually I think they are a little dangerous when they are in "rut." We would keep a safe distance if we saw them.

Aw, sorry you didn't capture any pics this time. That must have been a tad disappointing.

I've never seen elks, not even when I was in Norway. It must be impressive to see such a big animal! Thanks for your visit.

Shellmo: I would liked to have seen some Elk. It's hard to beleive there was a time they roamed free where they wanted to go.

Shellmo, I had no idea there were elk in Michigan! I know historically they roamed much farther east than they do now, but I didn't know anyone had a free ranging herd! Are they the same species as we have in the Rocky Mountains? BTW, I love the sound of elk bugling. It ranks right up there with the call of a loon as one of my favorite wild sounds.
