Raft

This is a Common Loon nesting on a floating raft made by local Loon Rangers in Gaylord, Michigan. This raft keeps the babies safe from predators which is especially important as Michigan's Loon population is declining.

It is important to note that you should never get too close to a nesting Loon. They are very sensitive and will abandon the nest if disturbed. Best to use your zoom lens from a far distance. They typically have two loon chicks which learn to swim within a day. I hope to get photos of the babies soon!

Shelley, that's pretty neat that they make up rafts for them. Can't wait to see the "baby" pics!

First, I have to say the title of "Loon Ranger" just makes me laugh out loud, all by myself here in front of the computer!

Second, I have never seen a picture of a nesting Loon,

Third, only 2 little loon babies? No wonder they are a diminishing population..with the human encroachment, odds are against the poor birds even replacing themselves...they NEED Loon Rangers! Beautiful pictures and a real education Shelley!

great idea making a raft for the loon nest. I wonder if the loon project here in the Adirondacks has thought of that. I know there is a big campaign to discourage lead fishing sinkers. Looking forward to seeing the babies!

I wondered what the raft looked like. Now I know! I think it's so great that these rafts are homemade! I'm assuming they are anchored down as well so as to not float around aimlessly.

Such beautiful birds. Hope I get to hear one this summer.

That is so neat the someone built them their floating nest. I didn't realize that the population is declining. Hope you get to see the babies soon.

Love you,
Betsy
P.S. How's Scout doing????

My uncle just returned from NM with pics of the COLO - alto I spent many summers in NM, I did not realize they nested there. But then I was not birding in those mis-spent days of youth. In VT, they are doing quite well and I see them on various lakes or ponds several times a year. A wonderful bird - always makes me think of a primordial time.

An interesting post and excellent photograph. I also liked the scenic shot of the Ausable in Monday's post and the concept that the verse conveys.

I had no ideas rangers did that for the loons! I learned something today. I bet they like their little rafts.
