*The Common Redpolls and the Pine Siskins still have not migrated onward which means Michigan has more snow in store for her. Though they are feeder hogs, I did enjoy their company this morning and was able to get a few of them to eat out of my hand. If you would like to see those photos, please click here.

Downy Woodpecker

I like to post my northern Michigan birds here for those who don't make it to my birding blog. The Downy Woodpecker is a year round visitor to Michigan and enjoys suet very much. They are the smallest and most common American woodpecker. I always find them to be such pleasant company with their beautiful colors and their sharp "pik" sound.

Blue Jay in a snow storm

It is 28 degrees at the log cabin and big fluffy snow flakes are coming down. I watched this Blue Jay flit from each of my bird feeders until he came to rest in this tree - perhaps to take shelter and enjoy the snowfall as well.

Hairy Woodpecker

The Hairy Woodpecker is one of my favorite birds. They are a year round resident in Michigan but you will see them more often in the winter if you put out suet cakes. The bird in this photograph is the female. The male has a red crown on top of his head.

The Hairy Woodpecker is very similiar to the Downy Woodpecker except it is larger in body size and also has a longer beak. It's also a little shyer than the Downy woodpecker.
